How to tell it's the cable
- The door hangs crooked, with one side lower than the other
- A thin steel cable is dangling along the side of the door or lying on the floor
- You can see frayed strands near the drum at the top, or near the bottom corner bracket
- One side scrapes, catches or comes out of its track
These are the signs Raynor lists (Raynor Garage Doors, Jul 27, 2026). If instead you see a 2–3 inch gap in the coil on the bar above the door, it's a spring: read broken spring and the door won't open.
What to do right now
- Stop using the door. Don't press the remote or the wall button
- Unplug the opener so nobody presses it by mistake
- Keep people, pets and cars clear of the door
- Take a photo of each side of the door and of the bar above it, then send them for a written quote
Raynor's advice is the same: "Disconnect the opener, stop using the door, and call a technician" (Raynor Garage Doors, Jul 27, 2026).
Don't
- Try to re-thread or replace the cable yourself. The cables connect to the spring system, which is under extreme tension (Raynor Garage Doors, Jul 27, 2026)
- Loosen the bottom brackets or set screws on the drums
- Lift the door by hand while it's crooked. It can fall or jam
Angi puts it bluntly: repairing garage door cables "is dangerous and not an acceptable DIY project" (Angi, garage door cable repair cost (2025 data)).
Why cables break
Raynor's list: years of use fatigue the steel; damp, unheated garages rust it; a cable running out of position frays against a worn drum or pulley; uneven tension from a past repair; and a broken spring, which can damage the cable as it lets go (Raynor Garage Doors, Jul 27, 2026). That's why a technician should check the springs whenever a cable fails.
What a fair repair includes
- Both cables replaced, not just the broken one. They're the same age, and a matched pair keeps the door level. Raynor and Angi both say technicians usually replace them together (Raynor Garage Doors, Jul 27, 2026; Angi, garage door cable repair cost (2025 data))
- The door re-balanced, and the springs, drums and rollers checked
- A written price before work starts, with any extra parts listed separately
What it typically costs
| Job | Typical price |
|---|---|
| Garage door cable repair | $100–$350, average $225 |
| Parts: a new pair of cables | $12–$50 |
| Emergency (after-hours) service | can add up to $300 |
